Today, we had the privilege of hosting Miss Joan Ousa, the owner of Subz N Munch, for our Year 10 Business Studies class at Millennium Global International School. As their teacher, I was thrilled to see the students engaging with the real-world application of our lessons on business activity, objectives, and ownership.
Understanding Business Activity.
Miss Ousa began by explaining the nature of her business, which combines both goods and services. Subz N Munch specializes in providing delicious meals while also delivering them to busy professionals and young people. She highlighted the importance of understanding target customers and effectively utilizing advertising channels, such as social media and brand influencers, to reach them. The resources she discussed were eye-opening for the students. We learned that she employs three staff members, including a chef, and operates from a leased restaurant space for two years.
Miss Ousa also introduced the concept of stakeholders, identifying herself, her employees, suppliers, customers, and even the government as key players in her business ecosystem.

Diving into Business Objectives.
Moving on to business objectives, Miss Ousa shared her financial goals of increasing sales, market share, and profits. However, she also emphasized her non-financial objectives, which focus on personal satisfaction and empowering women in entrepreneurship. This dual approach to business objectives resonated with the students and sparked an engaging discussion on the importance of having a well-rounded vision.
Exploring Forms of Business Ownership
Finally, Miss Ousa discussed her journey from a partnership to a sole proprietorship, highlighting the advantages, such as keeping all profits and enjoying independence, alongside the challenges, including long hours and difficulties in raising finance. Her ambition to become a franchisor excited the students, many of whom expressed interest in potentially owning a Subz N Munch franchise in the future!

The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where students posed thoughtful questions about her annual profits, competitors (notably Subway), unique selling points, and even volunteer opportunities.
Miss Ousa shared her background in Linguistics and IT, emphasizing how her education has been instrumental in her entrepreneurial journey, particularly in communication.
As a special treat, we wrapped up the session by sampling various Subz and loaded fries from her menu, which were a hit among the students!
This visit not only enriched our curriculum but also provided a tangible connection between classroom learning and real-world business practices. It was a fantastic way to inspire our students and turn theoretical knowledge into practical experience.
