Our Year 1 students recently enjoyed a unique cultural experience at Chiq restaurant, where they were introduced to the world of Japanese cuisine and traditions. The visit, organized to give students a hands-on taste of Japanese culture, was led by the talented Koki-San, whose expertise and warmth made the day memorable for everyone.
During the visit, students learned to make their own sushi, practicing the careful art of rolling ingredients with seasoned rice. They also mastered the basics of using chopsticks—a challenging but rewarding skill that had everyone laughing and helping one another. In addition to the culinary skills, students delved into Japanese artistry by creating origami figures and had a fantastic time playing traditional Japanese children’s games.
The students’ tasting journey included delicious Kaarage (Japanese fried chicken) and the classic California rolls, which quickly became favorites among the group. Each dish introduced new flavors and textures, sparking curiosity and excitement about Japanese cuisine.
As a follow-up to this experience, our students are eagerly looking forward to virtually connecting with their Japanese counterparts on Zoom on November 8 and again on November 27. These sessions will allow our students to share what they’ve learned and deepen their understanding of Japanese culture through direct interactions.
Many thanks to Koki-San and the team at Chiq restaurant for providing our students with such a rich, hands-on learning opportunity. The experience has left them with new skills, cultural insights, and a taste for adventure!
