A Visit from Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans - Learning about Healthcare Heroes

This week, the Early Years and Key Stage 1 students were thrilled to welcome two special visitors to our school: Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans! Their visit was packed with fun, hands-on learning as they introduced the children to the world of healthcare. Our young students were curious and enthusiastic as they learned about what doctors and nurses do and even got a chance to try out some medical equipment.

Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans started by explaining some of the essential tools they use every day. They introduced the students to a stethoscope, thermogun, and oximeter, letting everyone see and even hear how these tools work to keep people healthy. The children were fascinated by the stethoscope, especially when they heard their own heartbeat for the first time! The thermogun was another big hit as they took turns checking the temperature of their friends with just a quick point-and-click.

After exploring these tools, Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans talked about the basics of first aid. They explained why first aid is so important and gave examples of what we can do to help someone who is hurt or feeling unwell. Our students learned that sometimes just staying calm and finding help is the best thing they can do.

The highlight of the session was the chance to practice a medical skill themselves! Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans selected a few students to come forward and learn how to give “injections” to an orange. They carefully showed each child how to handle the syringe safely and allowed them to practice by injecting the orange as if it were a patient. The Early Years’ Reception Class, who are currently studying the "People Who Help Us" unit, were especially excited. They got a first-hand look at what it’s like to help others and learned that doctors and nurses are true community heroes.

This visit from Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans was an unforgettable experience for our students, leaving them inspired and more aware of how healthcare professionals make a difference in our lives. We look forward to welcoming more community helpers throughout the term as part of our learning journey in “People Who Help Us.” Thank you, Dr. Martin and Nurse Evans, for an incredible day!
